About this Blanket
A proud Aztec eagle warrior strides across this woven cotton blanket, crowned by an eagle-head helmet with a sweeping fan of teal and navy feathers. He grips an obsidian-edged macuahuitl, carries a round shield painted with a smiling sun face and hung with a feathered fringe, and wears a jaguar-spotted cape, a jaguar-head ornament at his waist, a beaded collar and feathered leg bands.
Around him float Mesoamerican motifs: two stepped pyramids, a coiled orange serpent, a crested teal plumed serpent, a red war club, feathered emblems and glyph-like ornaments. A bold frame of stepped fret patterns, a Greek-key style band and twin serpents in the lower border encloses the scene. The palette of teal, orange, gold, red and navy on a warm cream background gives the piece a vivid, codex-inspired mood.
